Whenever I download an attachment or something of the internet the file opens up in word pad as an encrypted file (scattered symbols throughout the page). Sometimes if I save a file onto my flash drive from another computer and I come to try to open it on mine, if I didn't save it in rich text format, then it becomes encrypted....can someone please help and tell me how to fix this?! Thank you! |

Hi M.B.,
An encrypted file would generally be one that prompts you in some way with a message or request for password, but a file that is corrupted might have 'scattered' symbols.
You didn't mention the version of Word you're using, but save the document first to your hard drive before opening the file and use Tools=>Options=>General [x] Confirm conversions on Open (if in Word 2007 it's a setting in Office Button=>Word Options=>Advanced and then try opening one of the problem documents to see if Word recognizes it as a 'Word Document'.
