I am finding several fonts that refuse to bold. They bold just fine in WP but when I select them in Draw, the 'B' is grayed out. Anyone know why? Thanks |

Peter,
It is very simple. If you do not have the true bold version of a font installed, you can't fake it in CorelDRAW. Yes, word processors do fake it. The same is true of italic.

You could cheat and try outlining the font to make it appear bolder. Does anyone know if that would have an adverse effect on quality when sending to press? |

It would also thicken everything uniformly, which a true bold font does not. See also Times New Roman vs. Times New Roman Bold. In the bold version, the serifs and horizontal strokes are almost exactly the same as in the non-bold. Vin¢

It will not be as classy as a true Bold, for sure. |

Does this make it appear bolder? Yes. Will it have an adverse effect on quality? Most definitely. Others have pointed out that a Bold weight of a font does not uniformly thicken the characters.
In cases where I need a bolder weight of a font than exists, I find a different font family that has the weights I need. I realize that clients can be really picky (and often really dumb) when it comes to using a particular font. We definitely owe them a brief education on why we can't bold the font they've chosen as well as the alternatives to make the design work.
