My mistake, I forgot how the prompt was worded. You say, "Yes," to keep the
newer file.

My mistake, I forgot how the prompt read. "Yes," to keep the file, "No," to
overwrite.

Anyway, in all my tests, simply adding the Dial-up Server causes no prompts,
PROVIDED DUN and VON are already installed. Only if Dial-up Networking and
VPN are NOT installed/updated do I get prompts to overwrite. Just installing
those two (they come attached at the hip) causes the prompts. Installing
Dial-up Server automatically installs the other two, and that would cause
the prompts. Here's the files I get prompted to overwrite.

SNMPAPI.DLL "SNMP Utility Library" 5.00.2195.5513 (KB314147)
LINK

VIP.386 "Windows IP Driver" 4.10.2002 (KB259728)
LINK

TELNET.EXE "Telnet Program" 5.00.1755.2 (from KB 240163, aka TELNETUP.EXE,
but that patch is no longer posted separately at Microsoft Downloads for
Win98. Gotta get it from Windows Update or from the Security Updates CD of
Feb 2004 or from me or from some trusted location. I checked this one out
and it seems kosher. I did a full compare between this one and the one in
the Security Updates CD from Feb 2004.:

I get prompted for each one twice, once for DUN and once for VPN. You might
want to check your versions of those files, and if they don't match,
consider reinstalling the Updates.

Correction, that second paragraph should read, in part:

"Anyway, in all my tests, simply installing the Dial-up Server causes no
prompts, PROVIDED DUN and VPN (not VON) are already installed." Somehow the
sentence got totally mangled.

I will remind you and anyone else that the OP started out by being rather
emphatic that it's a Win98 Gold machine that is being discussed.

Lots of MS patches have that same system. The file, once installed, needs to
be named the same whether for 98 Gold or for SE (or even ME), but that's a
PITA when packing up a patch, since it would require additional folders to
keep them separate. Changing the extension during installation is easier.

Did installing DUN 1.4 fix the problem, or can you still not connect to the

Still can't.

I have brought a second Win98FE computer into the picture.
Either W98FE machine can dial to the other or to the WXP.
But the WXP cannot dial to either of the W98FE computers.

At the moment I have yet another Win98_SE_ computer sprawled on the
floor.
I am trying to dial in to the main Win98FE computer,
but it has been stuck at "Answering..." for 28 minutes already (as I
type this).
It just keeps sending and receiving bytes (over 160kB each way so
far).
So that's yet a new problem/symptom.

Next I will try FE -> SE.

BTW, does anyone know if it has ever been done?
That is WinXPHome -> Win98FE without using VPN or any 3rd party SW?
I have been searching Google and Google Groups and have found a few
who have tried,
but have not found anyone claiming success.
(I don't give up easily.)

My mistake, I forgot how the prompt was worded. You say, "Yes," to keep
the
newer file.

That is exactly the "mistake" I made.
I have correctly answered that question many many times.
And, yes I was too quick on that first file this time.
Sorry for my impatience.
And thank you Lee and Gary for your help.
I did install Dial-Up Networking 1.4 as suggested by Lee.
Gary, the three files that you listed, I have the same version as you.
So for now I will assume that the mishap has been corrected by DUN1.4.

You'd have to know what the file is, first. Anyway, you generally do
NOT
want to overwrite newer files with older ones from the Windows CD when
there's a question like that. The files you have to worry about are the
ones where you said, "Yes" to that prompt. The ones you overwrote were
Windows Updates, mostly (though you may have gotten them elsewhere.)

I have a 2-CD set of Updates. The first CD is a copy of Microsoft's own
Security Updates CD from Feb 2004. The second CD contains all Windows
Update issued after that time that apply to Windows 98, 98SE and ME.
Note
that I include ONLY Windows Updates that I downloaded directly from the
WU
Catalog.

The CD set would allow you to reinstall everything that can be
reinstalled. I ask $3, check or cash, to cover costs. Write to

Didn't catch the filename so it's gone.
How can I find out and update that file?
I tried "Windows Update" which worked last time I tried, even long
after MS stopped supporting or updating Win98. Is there now no way to
bring Win98 up to date (as of 2006 or whenever they stopped)?

Harvey

Found the update site but it didn't update anything.
How do I find and download/install the old file?
