My daughter has a Dell 1GB desktop that came with Win 2k Pro SP3.
The new printer requires SP4. Would like to know where I can get it. Does it automatically install or is it a download to install. I would like to download it with my Win 98SE machine to a CD and then install it on her machine. Her machine is running well so I'd prefer not to install any other patches other than SP4. They use the machine for business so it's important to keep it up and running.
Would appreciate help with this. I searched the group but found no specific info.

I've used this with good success: LINK You can also download it for free from softpedia or filehippo but it's 232mb. In either case you will still have to go to Windows Update when you're done, which will require validation, but there will be much less to download than if you had only installed SP4. Note that "SP5.1" is not issued by Microsft. It is the work of one individual.

Hello Roger,
Do not forget, selfcreated update packages are not supported from MS. They can include malware etc.

Yes, and I realize that is enough of a disincentive for some to take a pass on this, which is why I pointed out that it was not a Microsoft product (and that I had had no problems with it).

Hi Meinolf,
Will installing SP\4 require validation? If so, what's involved with that? I have had problems with some MS updates in the past and I'm leery of installing more than they actually need to install the printer. As I mentioned they use the machine for business.
I do backup the machine periodically. In between total backups I have a batch program they run that backs up the documents and pictures etc. But I would hate to have to restore the OS.
Thanks to you and Roger for the info and links.

Hello Bill,
Never looked about validation because i use legal copies but i think not. With 2000 there is no activation part with MS. During installing the OS you provide the key, that's all.
Best regards

I'm pretty certain WU for W2K will only work for valid copies. If the particular installation has successfully used WU previously then there shouldn't be a problem, and perhaps "validation" was the wrong word to use. But if it is a new installation or one that hasn't used WU, the site runs a check, IIRC.

Thanks to you and Roger for the install info. I found a printer that should do what they need at Best Buys' Site. The requirements list Windows 2000 5.00.2195. Would Win 2K SP3 qualify?
Thanks,
