Why doesn't pdf file association work in XP anymore?

Even though my file association settings are set for a .pdf file to open with
Adobe Acrobat 8 , Windows XP will not do it. Why not? It always did in the
past. What has changed? As I've seen in a few other posts after a search,
it's seems it's another step to save the pdf to a file then open it. I tried
a system restore to a time when I knew it used to but even that did not work.
Can someone enlighten me? Thanks

Here's how to fix it. Find and PDF file, right click on it, and look
for "Open With" > Choose Program. Click Choose Program. If you have
Adobe Reader or some PDF read, it should be listed. Click it one to
highlight it and, on the bottom, you'll likely see "Always use this
program to open the selected file", make sure the check box is check,
click OK to apply. Try it now.

A brutal but highly effective method would be to re-install the application
that created the association in the first place, or Adobe Acrobat Reader in
your case.

Are you running Adobe (Acrobat) Reader v8.1.2 Security Update 1?
LINK

Does the behavior persist if you use FoxIt Reader?
LINK

Have you contacted Adobe Support?

Hi and thanks, yes it is 8.1.2 with Sec Update 1
I read the posts about FoxIt but didn't think it necessary to load another
program when I feel it should work as it has
No, I have not contacted Adobe support as I thought this is an XP problem
for sure.
I believe I have already tried TheeChicagoWolfs exercise at least twice.
I suppose I could try Pegasus' suggestion . I will delete all Adobe, go to
the site and dload the newest version. Maybe my old is corrupted by
"updates". I'll wait 24 hours to see if you reply to this and have an
alternate plan before I do that. Then I will use your link and use Foxit.
Regards and thanks to all who replied,

Hi, I uninstalled all Adobe acrobat I could find in add/remove programs,
rebooted the pc and went to adobe.com. I then downloaded the Adobe Reader
Version 9.0
Everything is fine now. I did not even have to create an association in
Tools>Folder Options>Files it did it automatically.
Thanks for the help.

You're welcome but I must inform you that we've seen all sorts of problems
(e.g., IE; Windows Update) associated with v9.0. I'd encourage you to
install v8.1.2 Security Update 1 instead.
