Shift-Ctr-End why not only 1 column?

Am I not doing this right? When I want to select a range of cells in one
long column (not selecting the whole column), I highlight one cell, press
SHIFT and CTRL and hit the END key. Sometimes it will behave properly and
select all the cells to the end of the spreadsheet in the column or columns
I have highlighted. But other times it seems to select several columns,
more then just the ones I initially highlighted a few rows on, and goes to
the end of the spreadsheet. Anyway to make it just go to the end of the
spreadsheet only highlighting the initial columns one selects?

Shift/Ctrl/End takes you to the end of the data in the spreadsheet. Not
reliable though because if you enter data in a cell below the data and then
delete it then it will take you to the last cell that has been used in the
session of the spreadsheet after opening.

Shift/Ctrl/Down Arrow selects the data in a column down to the bottom of the
data. However, if there are any empty cells then it stops at the empty cell.
Right arrow takes you accross.

Ctrl/down arrow takes you down to the next empty cell without selecting all
the data between start and end.

I can't believe I never knew about this combo.

Thank you - it will be incredibly useful to me!
