Do I need it, or not?

i Would not download it , it messed up my sons computer and he had to reinsatll everything on there. Sorry I am not computer literate, but I know when something updates and shuts the computer down isn't good.
Than i called and they kept telling me it's not the program, and they couldn't help with it. So that tells me they do this for a reason, maybe to keep people from there computers. So beware of the Service pack 3. Service pack 2 does just fine..

Until July 2010. After that security updates for SP2 will no longer be available.
If the machine in question is old and you expect to stop using it before 2010, by all means don't bother with service pack 3. Otherwise, best to install service pack 3 before April 2009, when the free installation and compatibility support offer expires.
Harry.

Thanks Jim! I'll try your suggestions. I use Norton Anitivirus, maybe something there is preventing me to go further?? -- Kath

Your problem is that some third party application changes permissions on certain registry keys. For example, TeaTimer (part of Spybot) does this sometimes.
As for whether you need it or not is a matter of opinion. If you wish to keep getting updates after 2010, then you should. At least that was my decision.

Jim, I disabled Norton and it worked. Thanks! I was a little fearful of doing that originally because I didn't want to assume that was the problem and screw something up. -- Kath

Disable Norton while you are installing SP3. Jim
Thanks. Generally speaking, it is a good idea to disable all AV programs |
because they can get upset by what the update is changing. I tend to overlook that advice unless I am installing such a massive update as a service pack. Jim |
