Hi,
I'm trying to integrate a Windows 98SE unit into my network, using a
Belkin USB Wireless G Network Adapter model # F5D7050. (looks like a
thumb drive) I'm using a Netgear WGT624 V3 router (uses both B and G).
I also have hooked into the router a desktop PC using Ethernet cable
which I consider my "main" PC, and a laptop using wireless. Both run
XP MCE 2005.
The computer in question is a PC someone gave me, "home built", and
has a 533 MHz Celeron processor. However, I also tried 2 other 98 SE
machines also that I have lying around, but the current 533 Mhz one is
the fastest and best tech advanced of the three, so I'll try to keep
that one on my network.
The main problem I am having is, that sometimes it is connected to the
network with a green tray icon and the application says "running
smoothly", and sometimes the icon is red, and says "limited or no
connection", or sometimes the icon reverts to no color, just the base
icon with no "radiation" coming from it. I get a solid 2 to 3 bars of
signal. It's just one minute I'm surfing fine, and then all of a
sudden, nothing. I'll then right click the red or bare icon and re-
connect, sometimes it does for a while and sometimes not.
It's a real bear installing the software for that adapter, usually
taking 2 or 3 installs and several reboots until it will try to
connect.
Also, even when the tray icon is green, I still can't connect to any
other networked PC's, and nothing shows up under Network Neighborhood,
except the default "Entire Network" designation, and upon clicking on
that gives an error that nothing can be accessed. With the other 2
PC's, I used to be able to access my other PC's, sometimes, but also
sometimes not, even with a green tray icon, and being able to access
the Net OK.
I'm tring to think if there was something I at one time may have
copied off the XP system and installed on the 98SE PC to help connect
or not, but even if I did, the other PC's connections were still
always "iffy" as I stated earlier.
This 98SE PC is just an extra PC I have in my garage, which is about
30 feet behind my house. I don't want to put anything "good" out there
that may get damaged. It's just a residential one and a half car
garage, part of which I put a stereo, TV, fridge, and the 98SE PC in,
where I can hang out with neighbors and friends during the summer.
Any help or advice appreciated. Do I maybe have a lemon USB network
adapter, or am I overlooking something in my router settings? I do
have the router. I do use a WPA-PSK [TKIP] security code. The Celeon
PC I'm trying now even has USB 2 instead`of the USB 1 the other two
have, so I don't think that's the issue. Thanks much,

Curious, how are you using WPA, when all the specs I have found for that wireless
adapter state it only supports WEP?
Example:
BELKIN F5D7050 IEEE 802.11b/g USB 2.0 Wireless G Network Adapter Up to 54Mbps
64/128-Bit WEP

Which driver version for the Belkin F5D7050 wireless adapter are you using? I see
there are different versions, depending on the FCC ID# for the adapter.

Does it work if you use WEP?
Do you have all the required networking components installed in Control Panel>
Network?
Have you tried adding the computer to the same Workgroup as the other computers?
