Hi
I have just change my Windows XP machine to a new Windows Vista machine.
my network was set up from my old Windows XP machine to a older machine
Windows 98.
now I have change my Windows XP machine to a Windows Vista machine I have
not found a way to reset my network to run from Windows Vista to Windows 98
can you help |

I am not very good at computer networking. I will let a more experienced
user reply. I have added microsoft.public.security newsgroup since they have
some really good experts there as well.

I have properly cross-posted this to the Win98.Gen_Discussion group.
hat are your real-world needs? Because in order to view and access shares on
the Win98 machine from the Vista machine, nothing much in particular should
need to be done. Just your "basic" network setup should take care of
everything.
But if you want to access shares on the Vista machine from the 98 machine,
it's a royal mess with several likely issues to deal with, the first one
being that you have to significantly disable Vista's modern network security
in order to let Win9x have access. Not something I'd want to do for any
extended period of time (and not at all while the network is connected to
the internet), but if you really want to know how, I've successfully used
the following advice:

Also note that a User must exist on the Vista machine that uses the same
exact username and password that is used to log on to Win98 (and you must
use a username/password to log on to Win98 in this situation, no "blank"
password allowed.)
Warning: It is often the case (though for some reason not always), that
while you can use the above to allow Win9x systems to see and access Vista
shares normally, Vista's built in User and Public shares are not to even be
touched. Doing so usually freezes your 98 machine.

I have found it is easier to use a network drive as a store for things
I need around my network.
I think most of the network drives will now work with Vista, as well
as Win XP, Ubuntu, Win98SE, & WinMe. (Some network drives didn't work
with Vista until updated with a patch.)
As Gary says getting Win98SE to work with Vista is a bit of a dog.

Exactly, you are both correct. Windows 98 Second Edition is indeed old but
having the maintenance operating system of DOS still makes it nice to have
around. I would imagine that Windows 2000 Professional and XP Professional
would play more nicely with Windows 98 Second Edition. However, if there is
enough demand for Windows 98 Second Edition to work well with Windows Vista
then I am sure Microsoft will issue a hotfix to address this issue.
