Windows XP SP3 failed to install, contacting microsoft the gave me
instructions on how to register certain dll files and all but 1 registered.
Wuauserv.dll didn't register and gave the message
Wuauserv.dll was loaded, but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found.
This file can not be registered.
SP3 is still not installed and 2 other updates KB946648 & KB952287 also fail
to install giving Error Code: 0x8007F0ED
Any Ideas

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed? What
anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall
(if any)? Were any of these applications running in the background when you
installed WinXP SP3?

If ZoneAlarm isn't installed, what is every installed?

I am using Norton Internet Security 2008 but I have tried installing SP3 with
this completely uninstalled and the computer booted into safe mode.

First you said WinXP SP3 failed to install then you say that you'd installed

altogether; cf. LINK).

Pa Bear,

With AV off and Windows/Download folder reset, I'm having the same SP#
installation issue - it fails toward end of process with Error Code:
0x8007F070 or Error Code: 0x80246007.

I HAVE recently reinstalled/repaired XP Media Center 2005 from a Dell OEM
disc and saw that you specifically asked about that. Is there a known
problem with installing SP3 after that?

NOTE: I did have to perform several steps to get my PC running correctly
after the reinstall/repair (mostly involving .NET). I could not get
"Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 1.0 Service Pack 3
(KB930494)" to install, but determined that was because my base started at
Version 1.1 after the reinstall/repair.

Thanks,

What a mess.

Is NIS 2008 still uninstalled? (I'd doubt it, else you wouldn't have been
able to use System Restore.)

If so, what anti-virus application did you install to replace NAV, and is
the Windows Firewall now enabled?

Is/was your NIS 2008 subscription current?

No when NIS 2008 was uninstalled and the SP3 installation didn't work I
reinstalled NIS 2008 (at no time was i connected to the internet without
firewall. Windows firewall was on when NIS 2008 was uninstalled just to be
safe) Windows Firewall is not now enabled as its back to NIS 2008. The NIS
2008 subscription is current and up to date.
MY latest email from microsoft said to
1) Try to register the windows updates files again and try windows updates.
Regsvr32 Wuweb.dll
Regsvr32 Wuapi.dll
Regsvr32 Wuaueng1.dll
Regsvr32 Wuaueng.dll

Regsvr32 Wups.dll
regsvr32 MSXML3.dll
regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 wintrust.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 vbscript.dll
2) If it fails, perform a REPAIR INSTALLATION on the computer.

Step 1 all registered except Wuauserv.dll

Step 2 How do I perform a REPAIR INSTALLATION would it involve going through
the steps in KB917964 and and I have 2 disc would it be Compaq operating
systemCD or Compaq restore CD

NB: Before attempting to install WinXP SP3 again, please read both of the
following article:

I would strongly recommend that you (1) disable Norton AntiVirus, (2)
disable the Norton firewall, and then (3) enable the Windows Firewall
before attempting to install WinXP SP3 again.

No when NIS 2008 was uninstalled and the SP3 installation didn't work I
reinstalled NIS 2008 (at no time was i connected to the internet without
firewall. Windows firewall was on when NIS 2008 was uninstalled just to
be
safe) Windows Firewall is not now enabled as its back to NIS 2008. The
NIS
2008 subscription is current and up to date.
MY latest email from microsoft said to
1) Try to register the windows updates files again and try windows
updates.

Regsvr32 Wuapi.dll
Regsvr32 Wuaueng1.dll
Regsvr32 Wuaueng.dll
Regsvr32 Wuauserv.dll

2) If it fails, perform a REPAIR INSTALLATION on the computer.

Step 1 all registered except Wuauserv.dll

Step 2 How do I perform a REPAIR INSTALLATION would it involve going
through
the steps in KB917964 and and I have 2 disc would it be Compaq operating
systemCD or Compaq restore CD

What a mess.

Is NIS 2008 still uninstalled? (I'd doubt it, else you wouldn't have
been
able to use System Restore.)

If so, what anti-virus application did you install to replace NAV, and
is
the Windows Firewall now enabled?

Is/was your NIS 2008 subscription current?

Sorry for any confusion.
WinXP SP3 has never been successfully installed.
Norton Internet Security 2008 is my firewall, antivirus, anti-spyware.
Zone alarm has never been installed.
What the my last post was meant to say was that I completly
uninstalled
N.I.S.2008, I then booted the computer into safe mode and thenn tried
to
manually install SP3, but it didn't work.

In control panel add or remove programmes there was an entry for SP3
but
the
only option was to remove it (How was this in there when it hadn't
been
properly installed? unless it is installing but just not getting
registered
due to the Wuauserv.dll file problem!)

I recently used system restore to go back to early june before any SP3
installation were attempted and the SP3 file was no longer in add or
remove
programmes

I did not reinstall WinXP just before I attempted to install WinXP
SP3?
But
the original hard drive became corrupt so i had to reinstall windows
on
another hard drive this was a while ago (probably at least 2 years).

I have looked at the link and KB952287, KB946648 also don't install

First you said WinXP SP3 failed to install then you say that you'd
installed
SP3 and the machine then booted into Safe Mode (which is another
issue
altogether; cf. LINK).

Is WinXP SP3 currently installed or not? If not, did you uninstall
it?

Have you read
LINK
?

By any chance did you reinstall WinXP just before you installed (or
attempted to install) WinXP SP3?
