Hello, I'm using CorelDraw 12 on Windows XP Pro SP2. I recently started using a Limited User Account for my day-to-day work. I've just discovered that Bitsteam Font Navigator won't open. It is telling me I don't have enough rights to install fonts. That is all very well but I'd simply wanted to view fonts. Also, I suspect that if I open a file and it has missing fonts I might have some trouble installing them automatically. Is anyone else using CorelDraw with a Limited User Account? can anyone suggest any possible solutions without giving up on the Limited User account?
Thanks,
Chris (Hunt) |

As I don't use XP i'm not clear on what a limited user account is. But it sounds like something you should get out of and try to set up a admistrator account to take charge of your world.
If the L.U.A. is some sort of block to all that is nasty on the internet, well that would be the microsoft tack, blow of any and all instead of building a filter.

Hi Steve, here's a link to a page about limited user accounts:
LINK
Basically, running as administrator on a computer that connects to the internet is risky. A limited user account won't protect from all exploits but is much safer. Most software doesn't need and shouldn't require admin rights. Admin rights are required to install fonts but I was surprised that Font Navigator wouldn't even start up. I should be able to view uninstalled fonts without admin rights. I need to figure out if there is a way to increase the privileges for Font Navigator so that it will open. I don't want to start using a full admin account again. Given the nature and level of threats nowadays it is like waiting for and encouraging catastrophe.

Chris,
Maybe you don't understand how Font Navigator previews uninstalled fonts. Basically it has to install the font to generate the preview and then the font is immediately uninstalled when you move on to another one.
I can only guess, but this is probably why you can't run FN without being the administrator.

Hi Foster, no I didn't realise that, and it surprised me. That sounds like a real kludge. With Thumbs Plus, for example I can view fonts without installing them. But yes, Font Navigator would need admin rights to install fonts. I'll keep looking for a way to give it the minimum rights required to work. In the mean time I guess I'll fire up Thumbs Plus if I want to look at fonts.
Cheers,

Chris take a look at X-Fonter it is cheap and for me, I work with signs and other lettering, it is much faster and cleaner to install , look at , or just load fonts for a one time use than anything I have come across. Also the guy who developed it is very easy to get hold of if you have a problem or question.

Thanks Steve, I may try the trial version and see how it goes. I have a lot of fonts but don't use that many. The advantage of Bitsream Font Navigator for me is that it is built into CorelDraw and will prompt to install any missing fonts.
All the best,
