Hi Folks!
XP Home SP3 IE7
WU stopped working for me some weeks ago. It starts to scan for updates and then give me:
The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem. [Error number: 0x80096001]
I tried everything I could find in the KB and Google.
Here are the relevant lines from the bottom of my WindowsUpdate.log:

1. See this KB article:
You cannot install some updates or programs: LINK
2. Judging by the ever-increasing number of posts here in the past few months that are similar to yours, the behavior may be due to a Vundo-ZLOB-SDBot infection, all protected by a rootkit infection.
Unexplained computer behavior may be caused by deceptive software LINK
Run a thorough check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis log to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2 (http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use (in conjuction with some other utilities). HijackThis will NOT fix anything on its own, but it will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware with assistance from an expert. **Post your log to LINK LINK LINK or other appropriate forums for review by an expert in such matters, not here.**
If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

I'd already worked through everything in the first link twice (all except for the rebuild option!) and validated everything in my HijackThis log. The only symptom I was seeing was the WU failure I mentioned below- no sign of any other undesirable behaviour.
However, your mention of an infection did prompt me to run a Spybot S&D scan. About 30 seconds in it started to complain that it couldn't access various files because they were "corrupted". I aborted the scan and went straight to CHKDSK. That found/fixed a few errors and after the reboot WU was working again!!
Thanks for tipping me in the right direction!
