Is it possible to check for the existence of a file on a hard drive and exit if it doesn't exist. If so, how do I do that?

No, not with Flash alone, and not from the browser - you'd need AIR,
Director, Zinc, etc. in order to access local files. If you're checking on a
server then any of the server-side languages will work- PHP etc. There is
the SharedObject that lets you store some info locally...
