on windows update, the Check Updates link is grayed out (disabled). It also says that some options are controlled by my administrator. I am an administrator. I checked the local/group policy and there is none. I have the app to auto apply updates on a daily basis at 9am....it is not doing so. all of the necessary services are running. I am running vista ultimate. |

See if this helps:
HOW TO: Enable the build-in(sic) Administrator account in Windows Vista LINK
If, after enabling the built-in Admin account the Check for Updates link is still greyed out, then there may be corrupted data causing the issue:
LINK
Try Method 5 *but*, open an Elevated Command Prompt in order to rename the Catroot2 subfolder or, do it using the built-in Admin account. LINK
How do I run a command with elevated privileges? 1. Click the Start button. 2. In the Search box, type command prompt. 3. In the list of results, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
*REMEMBER* to disable the built-in Admin account afterwards if you enable it for security reasons !

Unexplained computer behavior may be caused by deceptive software LINK
Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis log to an appropriate forum.
Checking for/Help with Hijackware LINK LINK LINK LINK LINK LINK LINK LINK LINK LINK
When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2 (http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use (in conjuction with some other utilities). HijackThis will NOT fix anything on its own, but it will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware with assistance from an expert. **Post your log to LINK LINK LINK or other appropriate forums for review by an expert in such matters, not here.**
If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA or Geek Squad) computer repair shop. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-IE, Mail, Security, Windows Desktop Experience - since 2002 AumHa VSOP & Admin LINK DTS-L LINK

All
The issue went away after I started poking around in regedit...seems like my computer was identified as recieving updates from a local server on the network (however, the network in question is my own and I would not do that to me)....removed the entries that reflected this, rebooted, and the problem went away.
Solved....
