I cannot update Windows Vista. I currently have 18 updates that have been downloaded but will not install. They date from April 8 through August 12. I am using the Home Premium edition.
Today, when I tried to update MS Office 2003 and Vista from the Windows Update site, all the Office updates installed successfully. None of the new Vista updates would install with the group. I also tried installing a single Vista update without success. The error code is 80071A30. |

Have a look at the Windows and Microsoft Update problem Solver LINK
If you have not done so, get Vista's Service Pack 1 first (by itself). Make very sure to disable antivirus and or anti-malware program before applying a service pack !! Re-enable when finsihed.

Thank you for the quick response.
I have service pack 1 installed.
Per your recommendation, I went to the problem solver website and tried to follow the instructions.
First, I used the software available through the site to rebuild the Windows update service and rebooted. This worked fine. When I went to the Windows Update site, it reported I had neither checked nor installed updates prior to this visit.
Second, I reviewed the instructions updating Windows Scripting Host to version 5.7. It appears to be applicable only to Windows XP. I ignored this step.
Third (last), I attempted to update the Windows Installer to version 4.5. The installation failed.
When I ran Windows Update, it identified 18 updates I was missing. (It appeared to be the same 18 I was missing at the start.) When I tried to download and install the 18 Vista updates, installation failed.

For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY in the United States and in Canada or by contacting your local Microsoft subsidiary. There is no-charge for support calls that are associated with security updates. When you call, clearly state that your problem is related to a Security Update and cite the update's KB number (e.g., KB123456).
If your problem relates to a Cumulative Security Update for IE, call the above number and ask to be transferred to the Consumer IE7 queue (which is 47830).

Thank you for the rapid response and advice. I will implement as you suggest and report back.
For your information, the problem I'm encountering is a general Vista install failure. Nothing associated with Windows will install. That includes: • 6 security updates, • 3 cumulative security updates (Internet Explorer, ActiveX Killbits, and Media Center), • 7 updates for Windows Vista, • 1 update the junk e-mail filter, and • Windows Search 4.0
If there is any additional advice you can give me based on this, please let me know.
