Hi Tom,
What version of Word and Window are you using? Is the document being opened from your hard drive, from email or from a server?
If Windows has set a temporary file to indicate that the file is in use, then Word will flag the file as locked.

I'm having a very similar problem on two computers in our office with Word 2007. If I have created a document from a template and save it as a new-named document and then I try to save it as an updated template of the same name as the original template, it tells me I cannot save the document with the same name as an open document. Even if I exit Word and come back in when I open the newly created document (not the template) and try to again save it as a template with the original template's name, it tells me I can't save it using the same name as an open document.
