I recently got my Dell laptop back from repair after a Windows XP re-install. I set up auto updates and got SP3. Since i installed SP3, though I have a load of updates downloaded nothing will install. I've turned the virus scan etc off but nothing seems to work. Any ideas?? Cheers |

I'm having same problem with my HP after repair and re-install of XP and I have found no solutions. I, too, am baffled.

A short search likely would have come up with the following answer to your issue...
LINK Try method 1 and try to update*. If fails - try method 2 and try to update*.
If both of those methods fail... LINK Get the tool and run it and then try to update*.
*try to update: - Visit LINK - If it asks you to install anything before you see a selection of "Custom" or "Express" - do so. - Once you see the "Custom" or "Express" selection, choose "Custom". - Scan for updates. - When it lists what it finds - install the critical ones. - You are generally safe doing the Optional Software Updates. I suggest avoiding the Optional Hardware Updates completely.

I tried all these. The updates download but won't install. I am going to uninstall SP3 and see what happens.

Hmmm... I think that is not a good solution.
We need part of your windowsupdate.log file... Try to get updates manually (as I instructed above) and after it fails (if it does) check your windowsupdate.log file and copy/paste the last 50 or so lines (turn off word-wrap) here...
Start --> Run --> type:
%windir%\windowsupdate.log
--> click OK or press Enter.
Scroll all the way to the bottom of the log for the most recent entries.
