Please help!
When i run windows update on vista through the security centre the update window opens and states that i receive updates for windows only, below this is a link that says "get updates for more products". However when i click on this it opens up explorer, shows me a screen shot where i should click start - all programs - windows update and opens up another windows update box thus sending me back to where i started. I seem to be stuck in a loop.
Even when i access windows update through start - all programs - windows update, the same problem occurs.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Have you been having any other problems with Windows Update functionality before this?
Do you have any Office (e.g., MS Outlook 2007) or Windows Live applications (e.g., Windows Live Toolbar) installed?
Are you running Vista or Vista SP1 currently?
What anti-virus application or security suite is installed? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall (if any)? -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-IE, Mail, Security, Windows Desktop Experience - since 2002 AumHa VSOP & Admin LINK DTS-L LINK

Thank you for the response.
Yes, i initially had problems when i tried to hide all but the "Users" folder on my OS drive, to stop the kids messing with them accidentally. After i had done this Windows Update would not detect updates at all. When i realised what may be causing the problem i unhid the folders but in addition also had to go specifically to the Software Distribution folder to unhide it. Once i had done this Windows Update began working again. Although i still cannot get automatic Microsft Updates as described.
To answer your other questions,
I have Microsoft Office 2003, Windows Live Mail but no Windows Live Toolbar. I have Vista SP 1 (KB936330). McAfee Security Centre 8.1, Virus Scan 12.1, Personnal Firewall 9.1. (makes no difference if i use Windows firewall or the McAfee firewall) No antispyware application (other than Windows Defender) -- Fred

IN RE the Microsoft Updates issue, I'd recommend that you start a free support incident, Freddie:
Unlimited installation and compatibility support for Vista SP1 is available at no charge through 18 Mar-09 • US: LINK
• CA: LINK
• UK: LINK
• AU: LINK
• Other: LINK | select Windows Vista | select Windows Vista Service Pack 1
IN RE your kids (and after you get the Microsoft Update issue resolved), see the suggestions in this discussion: LINK
Good luck. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-IE, Mail, Security, Windows Desktop Experience - since 2002 AumHa VSOP & Admin LINK DTS-L LINK

It takes a fool: to know a fool;)
Do you have a life or are you trying to get some self esteem by denigrating someone who has proven here to be of true assistance?

I've searched many message boards looking for a solution to the Microsoft update problem on Vista Home Premium, and consistently run across your posts, where you first ask people all sorts of questions about their configurations, and then regurgitate MS$ links that don't fix anyone's problems, or tell them to open a support incident... Why ask the questions if you don't have any answers?
Get a life - either decide that you're going to help someone (which would force you out of the Microsoft family), or shut-up, and let people post messages who want to provide helpful information, so that people like me don't have to sift through your drivel looking for an answer to an obviously flawed program that MS$ apparently don't know how to fix...
Well archictected operating systems don't have issues like this because there is a clear delineation between the operating systems and the applications. It shouldn't matter what office suite, firewall or screensave is running. MS$ should invest more of their profits into R&D and create a system that works!
